English as a Second Language
Non-native English speakers must submit a test score to verify English language proficiency unless they have attended an English-medium school for two+ years by the time of enrollment, in which case the requirement is waived. If this applies to you, please email pennesap@boldsummers.com to indicate you are seeking this waiver before submitting your application. If scores are required, TOEFL, IELTS, or Duolingo English Test (DET) scores are accepted.
Due to the competitive nature of this program, applicants must at least meet the following minimum scores:
TOEFL or At-Home TOEFL – 100 (iBT), 250 (CBT), or 600 (PBT)
IELTS – 7
Duolingo English Test (DET) – 130
TOEFL Institution Code: 2888
Department: University of Pennsylvania School of Engineering and Applied Science
NOTE: You must use the same email address for your ESAP application that you use to send you TOEFL score.
Test results must be valid when you submit your application. Letters are not accepted as a substitute for TOEFL. Click here to view how to submit your scores.
Visas
If you are an international applicant (non-US citizen/ resident), an F-1 visa is REQUIRED to attend the program (visitor visas are not acceptable). The University of Pennsylvania is authorized under Federal law to enroll non-immigrant applicants. For more information please see International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) website.
Once accepted into the program, international students will receive additional information about applying for a visa. The process can be lengthy, and we recommend beginning immediately to ensure your visa is processed in time for the start of the program. We will contact all accepted international students individually to provide information on obtaining their F-1 visa.
**For those students currently studying in the US on an F-1 student visa, an additional student visa will not be required to attend ESAP (as long as it is valid during the program dates). We will confirm this during the enrollment period**
