English as a Second Language
TOEFL scores are highly recommended for international applicants whose native language is not English. Students who attend a high school where the primary language of instruction is English may substitute TOEFL scores with the following:
- a letter confirming at least 1 year of attendance and the student’s English proficiency from the Head of School or Guidance Counselor
- at least one recommender must assess the student’s English language ability in their letter of recommendation
Please contact us if you have additional questions.
Visas
If you are an international applicant (non-US citizen/ resident), an F-1 visa is REQUIRED to attend the program (visitor visas are not acceptable). The University of Pennsylvania is authorized under Federal law to enroll non-immigrant applicants. For more information please see International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) website.
Once accepted into the program, international students will receive additional information about applying for a visa. The process can be lengthy, and we recommend beginning immediately to ensure your visa is processed in time for the start of the program. We will contact all accepted international students individually to provide information on obtaining their F-1 visa.
**For those students currently studying in the US on an F-1 student visa, an additional student visa will not be required to attend ESAP (as long as it is valid during the program dates). We will confirm this during the enrollment period**
